What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Even though a longer PIN may seem more secure than a shorter one, it's possible to hack or guess even the 4-digit PIN. VIN numbers are used to identify cars and provide a wealth of information about them. VIN numbers are unique to every vehicle on earth and are not applicable to alien vehicles (or whatever). The 17 digits of a VIN code are a mixture of letters and numbers which can be decoded in order to reveal crucial information about your car or truck.

A VIN number is the key to access this information that allows you to discover everything from whether your vehicle has been in a recall to how many times it's had owners change.

The first digit is given a value of 8, and each subsequent number increases in value by one, until the seventh digit reaches nine, which becomes two. Then, the entire VIN is translated back into its original form by multiplying the weight of each digit by 11. If the result is similar to the check digit then the VIN is valid.
